Interview Your Cast and Crew
Interviewing your cast is becoming increasingly commonplace in the theatre world. But don’t overlook the rest of your production team. Audiences love behind-the-scenes content, and they’re just as interested in hearing from the designers, stage managers, and crew as they are from the performers.
Here are a few tips to maximize the impact of your interviews:
Keep It Short and Sweet
Attention spans are getting shorter. When conducting interviews, focus on creating concise, engaging content. Plan your questions with editing in mind, so you can easily cut longer responses into bite-sized videos. This allows you to make multiple pieces of content from one session.
Mix Serious and Fun Questions
While it’s important to ask thoughtful questions about the production, don’t forget to add a dose of humor. People love to laugh, and a lighthearted moment can make your content even more shareable. Consider tying fun questions to the themes or setting of the show. Here are a few examples:
During a production of Beauty and the Beast, we asked the cast to finish the lyrics to “Be Our Guest” during the first week of rehearsals. We also asked them to guess what “the gray stuff” was.
For Kinky Boots, we quizzed the cast on British history.
For Fun Home, you could ask the cast and crew to share their favorite banned book.
Get Creative
Theatre provides endless opportunities to have fun with interviews. Use the show’s setting, themes, or even inside jokes from rehearsals to inspire unique questions. A mix of informative and entertaining content keeps audiences engaged and excited to follow your production journey.
By including everyone involved in the production and crafting thoughtful, entertaining questions, you’ll create content that resonates with your audience and builds excitement for your show.
